Grow (Intent)

At The Harbour School Portsmouth, World Views helps our students grow into confident, reflective and respectful young people who understand themselves and others. The subject provides a safe and welcoming space where students can explore identity, culture, beliefs, values and belonging.

World Views brings together elements of Religious Studies, PSHE and Humanities. Students learn about different religious and non-religious world views, cultural traditions and communities, while also reflecting on their own experiences and perspectives. Through these discussions, they develop empathy, tolerance and mutual respect.

We want every student to feel valued and heard. By revisiting themes such as identity, community, celebration, belief and responsibility, pupils build self-confidence, cultural understanding and a strong sense of belonging in the world around them.

Learn (Implementation)

World Views is taught in engaging weekly lessons that are carefully planned to build knowledge and confidence over time. Lessons are designed to encourage curiosity, discussion and reflection, while providing clear structure and support so that every student can take part successfully.

The curriculum includes learning about:

  • Beliefs, practices and festivals from different religions and cultures
  • Identity, relationships, values and respectful choices
  • Community, history, diversity and life in modern Britain

Teaching is interactive and varied. Students might explore real-life stories, handle artefacts, watch short videos, take part in structured discussions or complete creative tasks. They are encouraged to share their thoughts, ask questions and listen respectfully to others. Educational visits to cultural or religious places of interest, as well as visiting speakers, help bring learning to life and broaden students’ experiences beyond the classroom.

Throughout the curriculum, pupils are encouraged to think about important questions such as:

  • What does it mean to belong?
  • How should we treat others?
  • What responsibilities do we have in our community?
  • What gives people meaning and purpose?

Achieve (Impact)

Through World Views, students develop much more than subject knowledge.  They grow in confidence, empathy and understanding.

By the time they leave, students can:

  • Express their own views clearly and respectfully
  • Listen carefully to the opinions of others
  • Show understanding and respect for different beliefs and cultures
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of identity and belonging
  • Make thoughtful and informed choices.

World Views supports students in preparing for life beyond school by helping them understand the diverse society they are part of.  It equips them with the knowledge, confidence and values they need to contribute positively to their community and to thrive in modern Britain.

Our Curriculum Vision

World Views at The Harbour School Portsmouth is an ambitious and inclusive curriculum that places relationships, understanding and respect at its heart. By combining learning about beliefs, culture and society with opportunities for reflection and discussion, we support students to strengthen their identity, build meaningful connections and develop the understanding needed to succeed in a diverse and ever-changing world.
