Welcome to our school! We are thrilled to extend a warm welcome to all new students joining us at The Harbour School. Our student induction process is designed to ensure a smooth transition into our school community, allowing us to get to know each student individually and provide tailored support from the very beginning.
The induction process spans over two weeks, during which we aim to create a comprehensive student profile that allows us to understand the unique needs and strengths of each individual.
Here’s what to expect during our induction period:
1. Home visit or meeting in school
We kick off the induction process with a personalised home visit or meeting in school. This visit is an opportunity for us to meet with the student and their family in a comfortable environment, enabling us to gather valuable information about the student’s background, interests, and any specific requirements they may have.
2. Induction sessions (Week One)
During the first week of induction, students will participate in sessions (during the school day or as twilights) where they will be able to begin to build a positive relationship with key members of staff and complete a series of assessments. These assessments will take place at the relevant school campus or can take place at local community hubs.
These assessments include:
- PASS (Performance Analysis and Strategic Support)
- Reading Assessment
- Spelling Assessment
- CAT4 (Cognitive Abilities Test)
- Progress in Maths & English Evaluation
- Communication Screener
3. Lexonik Reading Intervention (Week Two)
The focus of the second week is to complete any outstanding assessments from week 1 as well as completing the Lexonik reading intervention program. This program is designed to enhance reading skills and comprehension skills, enabling students to gain success early at The Harbour School and set them off on a positive foot to continue to develop the necessary literacy tools for academic success.
4. Timetable Discussion
At the end of the second week, there will be a meeting held in school to discuss and agree upon the student’s timetable moving forward. This is an opportunity for both students and parents to provide input and discuss any additional support that may be needed. For students that are Dual Registered, their mainstream school will be involved to ensure that we maintain the communication with all stakeholders.
Throughout the induction process, our dedicated staff members will be on hand to offer guidance, support, and reassurance to both students and their families. We understand that transitioning to a new school can be a significant milestone, and we are committed to making this process as seamless and positive as possible for everyone involved.
If you have any questions or concerns about the induction process, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We are here to help and look forward to welcoming you into our school community.
