The Harbour School is commissioned to provide online small group teaching for students who are unable to attend their mainstream school for health reasons, alongside in-person emotional literacy sessions.
The purpose of The Horizon Service (based at The Vista Campus) is to provide a bespoke educational programme that allows students to successfully reintegrate back into a mainstream setting or onto the next relevant phase of their educational journey.
Students access online small group lessons in their homes and have the opportunity to come into school to work in a dedicated classroom within The Horizon suite of rooms. Students on roll with The Horizon service receive a carefully constructed curriculum, focussing on developing knowledge, skills and understanding in the core subject areas (English, maths and science), whilst also preparing students for their next steps via a personalised emotional literacy programme.
Students are taught by highly skilled practitioners who adapt their practice where needed and are thereby able to meet the needs of all students through targeted, differentiated support.
The table below gives an overview of the curriculum offer for The Horizon provision.
Subject | Number of lessons (per week) |
---|---|
English | 4 |
Maths | 4 |
Cross-curricular including STEM | 4 |
Emotional Literacy | 2 x 1-hour visits per week at the student’s home/in the community |

Selected students could also be entered for the following subjects: English Literature and Edexcel ‘on-demand’ Functional skills throughout the year.
Horizon students are encouraged to take small steps in becoming less isolated, with those who are ready attend the dedicated classroom benefiting from much-needed social interaction with their mentors and their peers. This in turn helps prepare the student for further reintegration opportunities in the future.
All students are supported to move on to the next stages in their education. This could be by reintegrating back to mainstream or to a more specialist provision within/outside The Harbour School, or studying for GCSEs and other qualifications to help with transition to post-16 destinations.
The curriculum ensures that no student is left behind and enables them to access a better and brighter future, equipped with both the emotional resilience and academic skills to achieve.
If students do not engage with the provision and/ or CAMHS, support will cease and students will be required to return back to their dual registered school.

The difference in my daughter is amazing! She is so happy. The difference Horizon has made in this short time is brilliant. She used to self-harm every day and she hasn’t self-harmed once since joining. Thank you for the support – your staff are the right people to be supporting her. This was definitely the right move for her.
