Exploring Post-16 Options
As you prepare for life after school, we’re here to guide you through the exciting journey of applying for college. Below are some helpful tips to navigate the process seamlessly.
College Application Deadlines
Applications for your chosen college are now open. To ensure your spot, especially for local colleges, we recommend submitting your application by December 22nd. Upon submission, you’ll be invited to an informal interview to discuss your study program. If you need further assistance, please reach out to your KS4 Phase Leader.
Year 11 students can also benefit from independent career interviews with our onsite Careers Advisor, Rudo Nkonde-Mvula. To schedule an appointment, contact your KS4 Phase Leader.
Choosing Your Path
After leaving school, your options depend on various factors, including your grades, interests, and preferred learning environment. Whether you’re considering sixth form, college, or an apprenticeship, it’s essential to research your options thoroughly.
College or Apprenticeship?
Colleges offer a diverse range of courses, including A levels, T levels, NVQs, and diplomas, catering to different learning styles and career aspirations.
Apprenticeships provide hands-on experience alongside studying for a qualification, often linked with a college or training provider. Through an apprenticeship, you would be working for an employer, earning a wage (£6.40 per hour as of April 2024), and studying for a qualification (often an NVQ) at the same time.
What Courses are Available?
From traditional A levels to practical NVQs and innovative T levels, there’s a course suited to every interest and career goal. Each qualification level has specific entry requirements, emphasizing the importance of achieving the highest grades possible.
- A Levels: These are akin to traditional school lessons, involving coursework throughout the year alongside end-of-year exams. A Levels are academically focused, emphasizing written work and research. Typically, students’ study three to four subjects.
- Diplomas: More practical in nature, diplomas rely on coursework and assessments spread throughout the year rather than end-of-course exams. The duration of diplomas varies, with Level 1 and Level 2 diplomas typically lasting one year and Level 3 diplomas extending to two years.
- NVQs: NVQs emphasize practical skills and can be assessed through various methods such as observed assessments, discussions, and written work. Many apprenticeships incorporate NVQ study alongside paid employment.
- T-Levels: T-Levels offer an alternative to A levels and apprenticeships, focusing on vocational skills. Equivalent to three A levels in size, T-Levels include an extensive industry placement lasting at least 45 days. This hands-on experience provides valuable insight into the workplace and enhances employability skills. T-Level students spend 80% of their time in the learning environment and 20% on meaningful industry placements, applying their skills in real-world scenarios.
What grades do I need?
To enrol in a course at a specific level, you typically need to have achieved the level immediately below it. For instance, to pursue a Level 2 Diploma, you may be required to have attained certain grades at Level 1. This underscores the importance of working hard to achieve the highest grades possible, as they determine the level of courses you can access.
