Vision/Intent
Grow
Our history curriculum helps students grow by developing their understanding of the past and its relevance to the present. By exploring topics like how Portsmouth has changed, the characteristics of heroes and villains, and the global impact of key events like World Wars, students gain a sense of identity and connection to the world. Through studying diverse cultures, significant individuals, and pivotal moments, students develop empathy, critical thinking, and an appreciation for the complexities of human history.
Learn
Students build a strong foundation in historical knowledge and enquiry skills. They investigate major events such as the Industrial Revolution, space exploration, and the Civil Rights Movement, while also delving into local and global history, from the Norman Conquest to the development of the NHS. They learn to ask meaningful questions, analyse evidence, and use key historical terms to explain change and continuity over time. By exploring themes like social and economic changes, power struggles, and public health, students gain a well-rounded understanding of the forces that shape our world.
Achieve
Our history curriculum empowers students to achieve by equipping them with the skills to think critically, form informed opinions, and communicate effectively. Whether analysing the causes of historical events, understanding the impact of movements like the Renaissance or Civil Rights campaigns, or exploring significant sites like Durham Cathedral, students develop the ability to connect the past to the present. Through rigorous enquiry and reflection, they build confidence in their ability to showcase their learning and make meaningful contributions to historical discussions.
By examining how the past influences the present, our history curriculum inspires curiosity, fosters analytical skills, and prepares students to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.
