About Primary at The Lighthouse

Primary at The Lighthouse campus is a full-time educational provision for students in school Years 5 and 6. It is both a specialist provision and an Alternative Provision. Primary at The Lighthouse provides highly specialised provision for children and young people with complex SEMH needs who have an Education Health and Care Plan, or for children, who for a variety of reasons are unable to attend a mainstream school. This includes social, emotional and mental health difficulties, permanent exclusion from a mainstream school and where looked after children are between placements.

We recognise the diverse and distinctive challenges that children with SEMH needs face on their educational journey and we have embarked on a mission to create a nurturing and inclusive environment where each child can thrive and flourish. Our vision is grounded in the belief that every child, irrespective of their individual circumstances, has the innate potential for growth and achievement. We are committed to unlocking this potential by offering an educational experience that is not only compassionate and supportive but also academically enriching.

Students are taught in small groups and access a broad and balanced curriculum. Social and emotional skills are a key part of the curriculum offer and students in Year 6 will access KS2 SATs if appropriate. All students are well supported to transition into the next phase of their educational journey.

At Primary at The Lighthouse, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum. We have a thematic curriculum, taught through high quality texts. We have an emphasis on developing a love for reading and take a flexible approach to our curriculum in order to engage and enthuse all of our students. Alongside our core offer of reading, Maths, English and Science, we have an engaging and stimulating wider curriculum. We enhance our curriculum offer with visit locally in Portsmouth and further afield. We frequently visit the farm, go swimming and participate in weekly outdoor education.
