As a parent/ carer of one of our students, you may be entitled to free school meals on a daily basis. This could represent a daily amount of £2.68, making approximate savings to you of £509 per school year.

A pupil whose parent/carer receives any of the following benefits is entitled to a Free School Meal:
- Income Support
- Income-based Jobseekers Allowance
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
- Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
- The guaranteed element of State Pension Credit
- Child Tax Credit only, provided your annual household income (as assessed by HM Revenue & Customs) does not exceed £16,190. Anyone entitled to Working Tax Credits not entitled to free meals regardless of income
- Universal Credit (if your annual household income is below £7,400 per year, excluding benefits)
Anyone entitled to Working Tax Credit is not entitled to free meals regardless of income, apart from those receiving Working Tax Credit Run-on (paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit).
Guidelines for applying for Free School Meals
- If you think you may be entitled to free school meals, you can apply online via the Portsmouth City Council website
- This application must be completed by the person in receipt of the benefit
- To apply for free school meals visit the Portsmouth Education Portal (click on the link)
- The application will be processed and should further information be required you will be contacted by a member of Free Schools Meal team
