In this profile, Sam shares insights into her journey, her commitment to ensuring every pupil feels valued and supported, and her vision for driving positive outcomes through tailored, holistic approaches to education and partnership working.

We caught up with her to learn what inspires her, her role in championing inclusion, and what excites her most about contributing to the school’s future.

Sam, what drew you to the role of Director of Inclusion at The Harbour School?
I was drawn to the role of Director of Inclusion at The Harbour School because I want to make a difference not only within the school but also in the wider community. I believe in inclusion for all and in ensuring that every pupil’s needs are met. The Harbour School is so varied, and no two days are the same, which is very exciting. Working alongside our young people is the most rewarding job in the world, and it’s an honour to be part of their lives and watch them progress both academically and in their personal and social skills. For me, it’s about changing lives and giving students a second, third, or even fourth chance to access education. We will never give up on them.

What did you do before?
Before joining The Harbour School, I was a senior leader in a school for students with a range of SEND needs in the London Borough of Croydon. This included students with complex needs, including medical needs. I oversaw the school on behaviour and attendance and am excited to bring my experience and knowledge to The Harbour School where I aim to drive high standards and positive outcomes for all of our young people.

How do you see your role in supporting pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs or medical needs?
Students are unable to learn if their needs are not met. I am passionate about ensuring they feel welcome and safe at school, with their concerns understood and supported. When students’ needs are addressed, they are ready to learn, and combined with high-quality teaching, this leads to improved outcomes for young people.

What does “inclusion” mean to you?
Inclusion means that no one is left behind. It means that we make sure students feel as though they belong when they are with us and are a part of our community. At The Harbour School, inclusion means meeting students’ needs at every stage of their lives and providing a holistic approach to a curriculum tailored to each individual. This might involve adapting lessons in the classroom, as well as creating bespoke timetables that bring the curriculum to the student and, where possible, reflect their interests.

How will you work with families and external partners to make sure every pupil has the support they need?
In my previous role, I worked regularly alongside a range of agencies to ensure the best outcomes for young people. The Harbour School is no different in this. It is important that we maintain excellent relationships with external colleagues to provide a holistic approach to meeting needs. We will work alongside families, putting the student at the centre of any support we provide. For me, it’s important to celebrate successes by contacting families when students have a positive day or achievement, big or small. I believe in strong partnerships with parents and will use a range of approaches to involve them in their child’s education.

What excites you most about being part of this new senior leadership team?
There is a real depth of knowledge in this leadership team, with members coming from a range of settings. This breadth of experience across phases and sectors, combined with many years of leadership, is very exciting. In recent weeks, we have met to discuss our next steps, and it is clear we are a cohesive team with high expectations and a strong vision. I am looking forward to seeing these plans come to fruition.
