Careers Programme
At The Harbour School, we are committed to ensuring that careers and aspirations are embedded throughout all aspects of school life. The Harbour School is devoted to ensuring that all students have an appropriate and sustainable post-16 destination that is tracked and supported.
Understanding students’ career choices and aspirations is paramount to a student’s success at school, and also in preparing them for their future lives.
Students at The Harbour School are encouraged to explore a wide range of career choices through our PSHE and careers programme. We aim to prepare our students for future opportunities in the world of study, and ultimately, in their working life.
Key Stage 3
KS3 students have a term of PSHE lessons focused on careers, Students look into different career pathways, collate information and advice, matching their skills and qualities to two career options.
Local employers are invited in to speak to students each year to inform students of the changing needs within their community.
Key Stage 4
All students are able to access
- In-house careers guidance in the form of individual and group meetings on post 16 pathways, apprenticeships and college courses.
- Taster days and open evenings at our local FE providers.
- All students will be introduced to our PCC careers advisor from Year 10. All Year 11 students will have the opportunity to receive individual personal guidance at least twice throughout the year.
- Local employers are invited in to speak to students at least once a year to inform students of the changing needs within their community.
- Year 11 students will have the opportunity to experience the workplace, this may be done virtually or through work visits
To reflect the changes and the labour market needs of Portsmouth and the surrounding area, we are continually reviewing our options programme at KS4 to include more vocational courses in partnership with our partner Further Education providers.
Alumni of The Harbour School have gone on to pursue a variety of post 16 options including;
- foundation course entry at university
- joining the army
- apprenticeships
- sixth form study
- college courses
- internships and jobs with training
